Every student, at some point in his or her life faces the problem of writing a successful essay, searches internet to find out the answer to the question “How to write a successful essay?”, looks for tips on how to get a best grade on the paper, and writes a work that the teacher or reader will, perhaps, enjoy reading. But in a rush for techniques and guidelines designed to help one to write a really good essay the first thing is the necessity to understand “what a successful essay really is”; Is it just a paper on which you get a good grade, or is it something more?

Successful essay is a focused paper designed to consider the audience which is going to read it, and also deals with the subject the writer has authority to write about. A successful essay is also a piece of writing where the writer manages to express own ideas or opinion in simple and understandable way. Successful essay should not be without the purpose so that the people will read it and forget the reading in 5 or 10 minutes. It needs to make the readers feel, think and experience everything they read. That is what makes a good essay; that is what makes it not just a plain text but a reading that touches the minds of others.

Successful essay is a work where the writer expresses exactly what he wants to say; it is not vague, but clear; it should not be boring, but interesting. Furthermore, successful essay should be relevant to the target audience, to the people who will read it. As you understand there is no point of writing about tips on how to make a tasty apple cake to, for example, a group of male college students, neither it will be interesting for housewives to read about effects using steroids has on health of a sportsmen. Thus one needs to carefully study the audience that the essay is created for, and choose the best suitable topic that will be relevant to them and interesting for them to read.

Also you need to note that successful essay is a focused essay. What does it mean? Well, imagine you need to write a 2 page essay on whatever subject you like, and you picked up sports. Of course sports, is too broad topic and you need to narrow it down, so you pick swimming. That is much better, but do you think you can write all you want about swimming and still fit it in 2 pages? I hope your answer is “no”, thus the topic should be narrowed down once more. So at the end you should come up with a very clear and specific topic, which is focused on preferably one main idea.

Also a successful essay is one that is on subject you have authority and experience to write about. I think you will agree that it would be difficult for one to write a good and interesting paper on “what are the benefits of visiting other countries” if he or she had never gone abroad.

So summarizing the above information, a successful essay is a type of writing that is focused and not vague, aimed to meet the scope of interests of readers, expresses what the writer wants to say and is not just an empty reading, but makes reader feel, experience and think during or after reading this essay. If these criteria are met, the goal of creating a successful essay had been achieved.

Coursework is an imprescriptible part of education in college. Every student starts to get his degree by writing essays, different projects and course works. But in many cases for some reason it is hard for student to realize what a coursework actually is and how does it differ from essay. This article may be helpful for some of these people.

The main difference between an essay and a coursework is that the coursework is a more complicated piece: it is longer, more structured and specific. In most cases it has more instructions for writing, needs to be more formal and includes graphs, charts etc. Course works are written according to specific outlines and therefore are more structured than essays.

To write a good course work student should try to follow important instructions:

1) Write an effective executive summary or abstract. The main ideas should be expressed and highlighted in the most understandable way. The topic should also be chosen carefully and reflect the essence of the paper as much as possible.

2) The writer should always stick to his topic of the essay and never shift to something unrelated to the topic or subject. There should be no “water”; every paragraph of the paper is to be directly related to lectures and research materials.

3) The coursework has to be written in the readable formal font such as Times New Romans or Arial, size 10-12. The writer should use subheadings in order to make the paper easier to read and have better structure.

4) In order to get a good grade all the classes where coursework is discussed or related topics are discussed should be attended by student. He is also encouraged to take as much notes as possible to make his further work easier.

5) Most of the times the paper must be written in professional language. Jargon and clichés have to be avoided and scientific terms used if needed. Statistical analysis and calculations are to be provided whenever it is possible and wanted.

6) Course works are a lot more about practice than about theory. The writer must make a sufficient research on the topic to find specific examples and to support his points.

7) The information provided in the coursework is to be supplemented with charts, graphs, photos, diagrams, pictures and other testimonials that can be useful. Visual aids give a lot more information and take less time to be understood.

8) Never hesitate to ask for help from your professor. Most of the professors in today’s colleges are more than willing to help a student who is seeking knowledge.

Always keep in mind that the guidelines provided above are generalized and you will always need to adjust them to your university or college rules and guidelines. Do NOT ever forget about editing, revising and reviewing your coursework. It will always help to get a better grade when you find mistakes in your paper and correct them. If you have someone who could review your article before turning it in, do it and you will be sure about getting a better grade.

This day makes us suspicious. Especially, our thoughts are always brought in question by the society, the teachers, friends, parents and, finally, by ourselves. Sure, there should be something that can turn over someone’s views and world outlook. Such a motive power actually exists, it is an argument. Exactly argument helps us to prove our thoughts and it has a great influence on our mind. Proving something to somebody is integral part of our life and college writing, the process which requires arguing time and again, is really inalienable part of our studies.

Investigating in college writing should start from the definition of what college argument is. This concept of argument is based in the expectations of readers to see the reason, which will make them agree with precise thought. So, argument consists of few consecutive statements. It doesn’t include just disagreeable disputes, but mostly kind of dialog with person whose thoughts are interesting and important to pay attention to. When we are writing a paper first of all we should not just express what we think, we should show our thoughts in such a way to make them clear, interesting and understandable to others. We should rouse the curiosity of our words among people.

There is a wide-spread misunderstanding between students that they may express their opinions in any way they want, ignoring the main principle of argument. It doesn’t mean that our private opinions are not important, but they should be supported by convincing proof. People must have grounds for accepting someone’s thought. The main aim of university is first of all to bring science in peoples’ thought. People shouldn’t just express what they think; they should show and prove others that their ideas are mattered.

Therefore, the argumentative paper should include two different points: the one for support and another - to object. Only in this way the reader can choose whether agree or disagree with precise viewpoint. Thus, a comparison is the necessity for any decision to be taken.

Sure we can not confirm that every our thought is absolutely right and each conclusion is complete. That is why we give people a possibility to choose whether they should agree or disagree with our point.

So, as a conclusion we can state that an argument implies a conversation between people who want to find true basis. College education includes all those values. During the process of studying we gather information, do research and make decisions which influence our ability to evaluate, think and write to grow.

So, our idea should be heard and proved. Thoughts we express should not be just simple information. They should be a palpable knowledge that can influence one’s mind. In order to reach this goal we should be guided by a simple principle - the principle of argument.

Book report

Author: Kate

See full blog of this writer

A book report is an exposition giving a short summary of a book and a reaction to it. While it includes some details, a book report is usually tailored to its readers. Emphasis usually falls on aspects of the book related to the subject matter seen in an academic group of studies.

A book report provides the reader with detailed and precise idea of the content of a book and its structural features omitting evaluation and comparison through providing objective information. The main aim of the report is to give enough information about the book to the reader. The book report is supposed to provide sufficient data for its reader to find whether the material the report narrates about is valuable and interesting enough to spend time on reading it. (http://library.concordia.ca/help/howto/bookreports.html)

The book report emphasizes author’s ideas depicted in the book, the subject matter that is presented in a descriptive and summarizing rather than analytical manner. (http://www.sdc.uwo.ca/writing/handouts/Book%20Reports%20and%20Book%20Reviews.pdf)

Length

The book report length may vary from one to three pages long as older students are often asked to identify advanced topics such as symbolism and find deeper meaning in the text.

In academic studies the purpose of a book report is to give full and deep description of a book within two or three pages. The book report has to be long enough to provide sufficient information and, at the same time, short enough to remain interesting and not to go into unnecessary detail.

Time required

The time required for book report research and writing may vary from one to several weeks depending of the number of pages of the book and the time necessary to write the report.

The complexity and the size of the book are the turning points in writing a book report.

A book report is considered to be well-written when it is organized in appropriate way and gives complete information about the book including publication details. Such process may take time making the work not an easy task for the students.

See full blog of this writer

During our education, work, or sometimes leisure – we are confronted with the assignment of writing a paper. And like every person – we want the paper to be good and effective and get praised for it. Here are some tips, which may help to create an effective paper.

Getting ready:

Step 1

First thing you ought to do is to make sure – that you completely understand the topic you are supposed to write. Without understanding the topic you will be lacking a part of confidence in the paper you are writing and confidence of what you are writing about, which is one of the major steps to an effective paper. You should know as much as you can about your topic, to be able to write it briefly and cover all the main aspects of it.

Step 2

The next thing you should do is to define the purpose of your paper. A clear purpose is always the best foundation for effective writing. To write a clear purpose place an emphasis on the problem you are facing and then highlight the goal of the paper. Always keep the main purpose in mind in order to decide whether you have to include or exclude anything from your paper when having difficulties.

Step 3

You should be clearly focused on the topic. For these aims divide your topic into main and supportive points. This is done in order to not to get lost in your paper and to carry the main idea through the paper with the help of supportive points.

Step 4

It is really necessary for you to make a list of all paper requirements. This is done not to forget to mention anything in your paper that is required.

Step 5

You should always keep in mind the audience you are referring to. Your success greatly depends on the views and attitudes of your audience. Being aware of these you will have more chances to effectively adjust and present your writing.

Step 6

Poor organization of a paper is one of the most common things we confront with. So one of the most important steps in your paper is outline. The outline basically is not just a simple plan of your thoughts and ideas. It is the main structure or the plot of your paper. The structure of the paper is supposed to be straight and understandable; and you can only achieve this by writing down the complete outline, making it well balanced and as detailed as possible. The most typical outline is supposed to have at least a beginning, the main part and a conclusion.

Step 7

The best way to mention everything needed in your paper – is to take a minute or two before writing the paper and to put down some basic ideas you would like to mention in future. This is for being sure you won’t forget anything and will mention what you consider reasonable and important.

Writing the paper:

Step 1

Any paper you are writing is a formal statement of your thoughts. This is how it differs from any conversation on the same topic – so try to use more sophisticated words and sentences. But don’t get carried away.

Step 2

Your logical relationships should be obvious to everyone. Otherwise the reader of your paper will not follow your lead.

Step 3

In order for the reader of your paper to get acquainted with the problem you are writing about, you are allowed to use some quotations and citing. Whenever you quote an idea, you’re ought to provide a bibliography (in an endnote or footnote) to the source of quotation.

Step 4

Use normal expressions in your paper in order for it to be understandable for everyone. The best example is foreigners that are not familiar with dialectical expressions and colloquialisms.

Step 5

When a reader analyzes a paper he also pays a lot of attention to grammar mistakes. So before you turn the paper in – make sure that all grammar mistakes are detected and removed.

These are the basic principles for writing effective paper. By following these steps you are on halfway to success.

How to Revise an Essay

Author: Chloe

See full blog of this writer

Revising an essay may seem like a difficult task, but once you know some tricks of the trade, it can be a lot easier and more rewarding. Try these three strategies to improve your work:

  1. Read it out loud. Read your paper out loud, even just to yourself. Listen to your sentences. Do they sound correct? Do your sentences sound choppy or disconnected? Do the words you use sound like they fit in the sentence? Are your sentences longer than you would normally speak? Many people are auditory learners, meaning that they have a better sense of their writing when they hear it. Reading your work out loud can help you catch mistakes by hearing them, when you never would have seen them.
  2. Reoutline your argument. Look at the topic sentence of each paragraph. Make an outline of your paper, using each topic sentence as an entry. Look at your argument structure. Does each paragraph in a given section add to your argument? Does your paper follow a logical order? Do you repeat yourself? Does each paragraph add to the final product? Looking at how you succeeded in organizing your argument can also show where you failed at making your point and can help you find ways to better present your argument.
  3. Put it away for a while. The best way to revise an essay is to put it aside for an evening. Do other work, go have some fun, think about anything other than the paper. When you return to it, come at it with fresh eyes. Was that argument really what you were trying to say? Have you left out any words or ideas that you thought you had included? Is there a better structure for your argument? By stepping away from the paper, you can edit it later as if it were someone else’s work, and catch mistakes that were blending in yesterday.
